Most of us see ourselves surrounded by family, young and old, perhaps at a family meal on a special occasion, everyone dressed their best. But who is the light in this picture? Children. Your children, your nephews and nieces and little cousins and grandchildren who have grown SO tall since the last time you saw them. Youth are the LIGHT of our community, the light, hope and future of our ummah.
Have you ever seen the light gleaming in the eyes of a 16-year-old as he greets an elderly person at her door with groceries for the week? As he chews on the piece of candy she made him take, he laughs down the stairs out front, and as his feet hit the sidewalk, he feels a light rising in his heart. THIS is the power of our mission.
Brooklyn Muslim Center strives to give Muslim youth a supportive place to take their journey on a positive path. They’ll be in close proximity to caring adults who will motivate them to want to find a hopeful purpose, to give them a map if they’ve lost their direction, to keep them on the path toward light, to equip and empower them to become strong Muslim leaders of our community, not tomorrow – today!
We’re an extension of their ummah with big enough arms and shoulders to embrace them wherever they are in life – in doubt, in sin, in pain, in sadness, in frustration or confusion. We will stand up for them and walk with them through those times.
We must work together to fuel the light of our communities – our youth.
You can join us and be FOR YOUTH too by supporting Brooklyn Muslim Center. When you give, you are pouring oil in the new lamps that will light the future of our communities…a lamp that burns low will start to flicker. We do not blame the flame for flickering, we refill the oil in the lamp. We have to make sacrifices today so that the lights of our community, our youth, burn brightly for all to see to the praise of our Lord.
We envision Brooklyn Muslim Center will be a place for games, swimming, laughter and (occasional) junk food. It will be a place of their own for prayers together. A place where they are called upon to lead their peers, nurture their leadership skills, and practice their speaking skills – a place where they find their voices as Muslims. A place where they can encourage others and be encouraged.
Conquering almost any challenge in life as a teenager is so much easier when you have even ONE friend you know you can count on. Brooklyn Muslim Center will be a whole community of peers led by adult partners who want to be there for YOUTH – to be a friend.
We want Brooklyn Muslim Center to be here for Muslim youth, to pull them out of the darkness they might be facing today. When our youth face darkness, we want their feet to find their way through our doors as soon as possible. And they will find us because we’ll be conveniently located in their own neighborhood, just a few blocks, maybe a quick bus ride away. They will know exactly where to go whenever they feel scared, angry, doubtful, sad…even lonely or just bored. We know the truth about “idle hands,” don’t we? Our plan is to keep our youth busy doing good.
After seeing the dire need for preserving Islam he has embarked on building the Brooklyn Muslim Center. Help build the historic center by donating for the down payment now.
We can’t expect our youth to find their way alone in this complicated world unless we give them the tools and the spiritual foundation to prepare them when they face the troubles and temptations of society today. Some of us may find it easy to criticize youth from the outside, looking in and assume they’re lazy or self-absorbed. The truth is, when given the proper guidance and ample opportunity, our youth will jump at the chance to use their hands and help others.
But what do kids really DO at Brooklyn Muslim Center?
Good question. The answer is: Good WORK. When we see certain societal problems, we tend to blame the youth sometimes, don’t we? We forget that we weren’t much different at their age. How did we get through those times? We had older brothers, sisters, uncles, parents and friends closeby to support us and keep our feet on a good path.

So who are we, brothers and sisters, if we do not stand with our youth against this darkness they are facing? Who are we as a community if we do not walk arm in arm with our youth and tell them, “Come to us. We are FOR you. You are welcome here. We will fight on YOUR side.” This is the message youth will hear at Brooklyn Muslim center.
The answer is – whatever puts a light in their hearts.” And of course, if they don’t come in with specific plans and ideas, we’ll be within arm’s reach to help them out with the rest.
